Illinois is the pumpkin capital of the US, we grow more pumpkins than any other state and have around 25,000 acres of land taken up by growing pumpkins, which accounts for 95% of the countries supply, but the industry constantly faces a terrible blight that almost caused its total collapse in 1999.
The pumpkin industry in Illinois is the largest in the country, the state is the main pumpkin producer and processor in the United States and in 2007 the value of unprocessed pumpkins in the field in the state was around $22 million. A pumpkins value goes up significantly after processing and the entire industry is worth around $166 million. Read more
